We are seeking to appoint 2 new full time doctors to join the existing cohort of foundation year doctors. These posts combine emergency surgery on call exposure, elective activity in each surgical specialty and allotted time for pursuing secondary interests, academia, management/leadership and surgical education. The roles are focused on delivering high quality surgical training at FY1/2 level whilst optimising individual CVs and applications. Applicants with interests in General Surgery including EGS, Upper GI, Colorectal, Endocrine, Breast and Hepatobiliary Surgery are welcomed. Aligned with the Improving Surgical Training Gold Standard framework, we have successfully launched a new simulation programme delivering laparoscopic accreditation in the form of ALSGBI LAPASS, have SHO, junior registrar level focused training lists running throughout the week and are committed as a unit to robust educational and clinical supervision and the development of individual research, teaching and leadership skills. The applicant is expected to have an interest in General Surgery. Basic clinical skills equivalent to FY level should be demonstrated. Previous exposure to NHS practice is essential. The successful applicant should be able to perform at the level expected of an FY doctor. DUTIES OF THE POST The work pattern of this post is comprised of three elements: Element 1: Clinical experience in abdominal surgery placement at St James University Hospital (~75%). Base specialties available include EGS, Upper GI, Colorectal, Endocrine, Breast and Hepatobiliary Surgery. Element 2: The post will contribute to the emergency general surgery on call of long days, nights and twilights. Element 3: There is the opportunity for candidates to enhance personal extra-clinical interests. During the 4 months the doctor will be allocated to Self-development days to support any research or training opportunities. Applicants will be supported by trained Clinical and Educational supervisors. Elective opportunities may involve attendance at major and minor surgery, outpatient clinics, ward rounds, teaching and a contribution to the Trusts Clinical Governance Programme. LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY Elective duties will be at the level of a FY1 and on call duties will be at the level of a FY1. These are not Deanery (Local Education and Training) approved training posts but engagement in the training process and HORUS assessment is encouraged to benchmark against deanery trainee colleagues. AUDIT AND GOVERNANCE The appointees are expected to attend departmental clinical audit and governance mortality meetings. The appointees are expected to fully comply with the LTHT Clinical Governance Agendas.
